This exhibition seeks alternative forms of art that deal with digital technology. 
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We say that we must use high technology in a critical way because it moves society and culture in a one-sided direction and causes negative side effects. However, for some artists, the technology exists merely as an artistic tool. As a result, many artworks that deal with digital technology seem to exist as a background image that offers illusional and immersive images; a form of entertainment or a game that may look dimensional, but actually rather makes the layer of experience flat. On the other hand, for some artists who deal with digital media, the term \u2018media art\u2019 is awkward. Possibly and partially it is because the definition of media art has become \u2018spectacular-ized\u2019 as a glamorous digital display that responds to the \u201cFourth Industrial Revolution\u201d promoted by the government or is contextualized within the larger visual art field rather than distinctively defined as media art as a separate genre or medium.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Digital technology has been developed by governments and large corporations and is consumed and maintained for them and by them. A lot of media art practices and works have been glamorously and gigantically created based on the capital and knowledge of these governments and large corporations and mostly end up under their ownership. In this context, where those so-called media arts and digital arts are bulking themselves up, this exhibition starts to question from a reverse point of view whether digital based arts can be created in a different and compelling way as a form of \u2018own-able,\u2019 and thus \u2018purchase-able\u2019 by an individual. Nowadays, we can obtain and buy almost everything from the internet, but ironically those digital based arts are difficult for an individual to own. Leaving behind the half-obsolete-term \u2018media art,\u2019 here we want to contextualize the experimentation of the artists, who suggest criticism of the illusion of technology that threatens the survival of people under the name of development and prosperity and keeps being represented under the glamorous name of \u2018combining art and technology.\u2019

The artists in this exhibition hail from different genres, and intentionally not all of them are media artists. Interpreting digital based arts in their own way, they grant values of individuality\/personalization to their artworks. Based on the interpretation of the artists, the directions of individuality\/personalization are different from each other, but they all seek alternative forms of digital-based arts within the given mission of \u2018digital-based arts that can be owned by an individual.\u2019

Degital is a purposely wrong spelling of \u2018digital\u2019, coined to perform multiple roles, such as expanding the idea of digital arts, suggesting the alternative, being playful, and suggesting interesting line-ups of artworks. This method is also borrowed from a feministic approach where they intentionally change the spelling to suggest a new perspective (woman\/womyn), and we aim to raise awareness of diversity issues (gender, education, etc) in both digital and media arts.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The word \u2018digital\u2019 originates from the Latin word \u2018digit,\u2019meaning a finger used to count numbers in order, and \u2018digital\u2019 means dealing with discrete values. However \u2018degital\u2019 is coined from the prefix \u2018de-\u2019, which means denying, absence, and rejection, yet maintains a similar pronunciation. 
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018In your hands\u2019 is a direct translation – for example, \u2018digital technology in your hands\u2019 means \u2018easy technology\u2019 or \u2018simple technology\u2019 in Korean. But in this exhibition, it also suggests the literal meaning that the audience can \u2018own\u2019 artworks as a buyer. In English, \u2018in your hands\u2019 signifies dependency, such as \u2018the future is in your hands,\u2019  which connotes the responsibilities and expectations toward the future, as we are interested in the future possibilities of digital-based arts.

In this talk, Eunji Briller Kim, Hojun Song, and Hyun Parke discuss the artists\u2019 point of view on Seoul City Hall\u2019s development plan for the Euljiro and Chunggyecheon area. Presenting artistic, cultural, and industrial values with creative examples that are based on this area, this talk aims to connect the potentiality and artistic value of the manufacturing techniques and industrial ecology as something more than just a historical symbol. In this workshop, led by Unmake Lab, we pursue an alternative happiness with the technology of emotion quantification by computer vision. How is happiness, the ultimate bright future, analyzed by computer vision? Participants will analyze the patterns of quantification of happiness that the computer vision shows and become seekers of happiness pursuing an alternative happiness. Maybe the workshop will become a place of competition for higher scores of happiness. Or maybe it is just a misuse of technology.
